![]() THE HOLIDAY
Written and directed by- Nancy Meyers Produced by- Nancy Meyers, Bruce A. Block Starring- Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet, Jude Law, Jack Black, Eli Wallach, Edward Burns, Rufus Sewell It’s the holiday season when you feel like wrapping yourself up with the warmth and joy of an adorable romance, an innocent laugh to hide away that troubled life, a few drops of tears of elation perhaps- and if you want to try it out with a movie, The Holiday is just the perfect piece to accompany you in this festive flavor. A sweet, sophisticated romantic comedy, The Holiday is an adorable treat with its star-studded casting although not without certain loopholes. The movie begins with Iris (Kate Winslet), a beautiful English columnist, lamenting and crying her heart out for unreturned love, feeling dejected and lonely, and desperately trying to figure out an escape in the Christmas holidays. On the contrary, Amanda, living in Los Angeles, is rich, successful and gorgeous whose only problem seems to be her inability to cry. Cheated by her boyfriend, Amanda wants to get away from the usual life and on impulse agrees on a home exchange program with Iris in the net for a couple of weeks. They both wanted to get away from love but under different circumstances and of course different countries they find themselves caught up in love again, complicating matters further. Amanda falls head over heels for Iris’ brother Graham (Jude Law), the sexy and dashing father of two little girls whereas Iris found herself loving the company of a co-worker of Amanda’s ex, called Miles (Jack Black) and also befriends an elderly neighbor who turns out to be an Academy Award winning scriptwriter. ![]() The movie all in all tells a cute romantic story of some beautiful people in beautiful places but the real beauty of the movie lie in its music. Great compositions by Hans Zimmer that is heartbreaking and heartwarming at the same time and actually makes the movie a lot more appealing than it actually is.
![]() The greatest drawback of the movie is the lack of chemistry between the lead roles. Jude Law does a pretty decent job as the sexy dad, but somehow Cameron Diaz looked failing to respond to his charm and charisma. The love that director Nancy Meyers tried to portray at every point between Amanda and Graham seemed hard to find onscreen. Jack black seemed totally out of place in a role like Miles trying to be a good guy and again no onscreen chemistry clicked between him and Kate Winslet. But definitely there were some pretty dramatically beautiful scenes in the movie like when Kate Winslet was heartbroken watching her ex getting engaged and when we see Cameron Diaz running, for the love she realizes she can’t leave- sure to bring a drop of tear in your eyes.
The movie has enough fun, enough flirtatious merriment and enough gaiety to make you smile throughout and even in parts where you find your face wet you will surely do so with a smile. The perfect holiday romance it is a nice Christmas present to cherish. |

RE: Movie Review: The Holiday (2006)
This film is not only the pain and sick of heart, which is to meet and enjoy the real thing in life. I felt that Kate and Cameron did a wonderful job. All the characters are wonderfully developed especially Jude Laws character in the story of Judas adds an extra dimension to his character and really love him even more.
